Diet After Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty

When you start a weight loss journey, it can bring about a remarkable transformation, not only in your appearance but also in your lifestyle. When considering different weight loss procedures, understanding how they might affect your daily activities is crucial.

One option gaining popularity is the Suture Sculpt Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG), which sets itself apart in several ways. Unlike traditional gastric sleeve surgery, Suture Sculpt ESG offers the freedom to stay active right from the get-go. While gastric sleeve surgery requires around six weeks of recovery time, Suture Sculpt ESG allows you to participate in activities you feel comfortable with almost immediately.

However, there's a catch: Your stomach needs time to adjust to its new shape and size. For approximately a month following Suture Sculpt ESG, a gradual return to eating is recommended. Today we are going to take a look at what this adjustment period looks like.

Is Following The Post ESG Diet Tough?

Many patients are worried about the post-endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty diet and think it is going to be excruciatingly hard, but in reality, compared to the diet after gastric sleeve surgery, it’s a piece of cake! Oh, just kidding! You are on a weight loss journey and limiting your intake of sugar!

Maybe a better way to say this is that it will only take you a month to be able to eat solid foods again, and it will go by a lot faster than you think. The gastric sleeve surgery patients will still be sipping their purees when they are eating a nice, juicy piece of chicken!

Let’s be honest, it is never easy or particularly fun to have to watch what we eat but just concentrate on the big payoff on the other side. You will significantly improve your health and hopefully even rock a great-fitting pair of jeans.

The support team at Batash Medical will be there for you, supporting you every step of the way. We will help you with strategies and dietary advice that will guide you through this first month as easily as possible. We have some great recipes we can share with you that can make even your puree stage interesting and tasty.

What Does The Post-Op Diet For Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Look Like?

Following Suture Sculpt ESG, you will start with a week of liquids, then a week of purees, and finally two weeks of soft foods. Once this transitional phase is complete, you are cleared to reintroduce solids into your diet.

Week One, Days 1–7: Transparent Fluids

  • Pure grape, cranberry, or apple fruit juice;
  • Translucent broths made from beef, vegetables, or chicken;
  • Popsicles without sugar;
  • Gelatin without sugar, like Jell-o;
  • Still water and chips of ice;
  • Crystal Light or Kool-Aid (sugar-free);
  • Decaffeinated teas and coffee.

Stay away from:

  • Beverages that are carbonated;
  • Drinks full of sugar (sweet team, Hawaiian Punch);
  • Juices that are acidic, such as grapefruit, pineapple, tomato, or orange juice.

Week 2 (Days 8–14) Perfectly Pureed Foods

Almost any food that can be blended into a perfectly smooth consistency without any noticeable chunks or thickness that might impede swallowing is suitable for this week. Here's a list of foods that are ideal for pureeing:

  • Mashed potatoes;
  • Applesauce;
  • Avocado;
  • Banana;
  • Cooked carrots;
  • Steamed spinach;
  • Butternut squash;
  • Cooked peas;
  • Greek yogurt;
  • Cottage cheese;
  • Oatmeal (cooked well);
  • Cooked chicken or turkey (with broth);
  • Cooked fish (with broth);
  • Cream of wheat or rice cereal;
  • Scrambled eggs (cooked thoroughly);
  • Canned pumpkin puree;
  • Silken tofu;
  • Hummus;
  • Cooked pasta (overcooked for a smoother texture);
  • Smooth nut butter (like almond or peanut butter).

Weeks 3 and 4 (Days 15–30) Soft Foods

This is where things start getting much easier and more interesting! For the next two weeks, you need to eat foods that can be easily mashed with a fork. With some creativity and a dash of common sense, you can transform a wide range of ingredients into softer versions of themselves. However, it's crucial to keep in mind that maintaining a nutritious balance is key. Opt for low-calorie and sugar-free choices, and consult with your healthcare provider to align your meal plans with their recommendations. The ultimate goal is to achieve healthy, satisfying meals that support your weight loss journey while keeping your taste buds happy.

Day 31 and Going Forward

You can now eat pretty much whatever you want but don't forget that Suture Sculpt ESG is a tool to aid weight loss, not a magic solution. To achieve lasting results, you must choose healthy, low-calorie foods while steering clear of sugar and junk food.

The procedure is a catalyst for change, but your active involvement in making nutritious choices is what will ultimately lead to a successful and sustainable weight loss journey. Remember, the power lies in your hands and on your plate.

Here at Batash Endoscopic Weight Loss Center, we provide excellent post-procedure support that includes helping you navigate your way through this special diet directly after your procedure.
